State Congress president Siddarth Patel resigned after the polls results, taking moral responsibility o the defeat.

He has sent his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi, party sources said.

Modi further said the image that BJP is pro-rich and an urban party would be dispelled with today's victory.

"I have send my resignation to the party president Sonia Gandhi," Patel told reporters here this evening.

"There are doubts about the results which are not as per our expectations. But in spite of this taking moral responsibility for the results of local body elections I have resigned," he said.

The polls had high stakes for the main parties of the state. The result has come as a major boost to Modi and his party, which is looking at this elections keeping in mind the December 2012 polls.

Congress had called its national leaders like Subodhkant Sahay, Sachin Pilot, Jyotiraditya Scindia and State Congress in-charge Sudhakar Reddy to campaign along with state leaders.

Out of 24 district panchayats, Congress had won in six in the last elections in 2005, the party had won about 20 block panchayats out of 208, while out of 53 municipalities the Congress had won in six.
